The Approved Novel List for Language Arts Grades 5-12 was updated at the June 2012 meeting of the Board of Education. Classroom teachers should choose from this list when teaching novels in the classroom. Teachers conducting read-alouds should not use books contained on this list for future grade levels as these may be books used for individual reading and classroom instruction. Additions or changes to the list can be made annually based upon recommendations from the language arts department.
Special Education Teachers: Self-contained classrooms should attempt to follow approved novel list as appropriate for individual students but may need to provide more individual titles to best meet student needs. They should not use novels that are on list for higher grade levels in their classrooms. For example:The Giver is a Grade 7 novel choice. It could be used in 7th grade self-contained or in grades 8-12 self-contained as appropriate for students, but should not be used in grades 5 and 6 self-contained.
